Words for Loss Felt

2018-08-13

Although words can never fully express how much someone means to us, words can still provide comfort and hope following the departure of a loved one.

Can we describe a state and make a map of sorrow ? Sorrow, it turns out, is not a state, but a process.

"Where you used to be, there is a hole in the world, which I find myself constantly falling into."

When those we love die, we can honor their spirit for as long as we live. We make a commitment that we are going to take whatever lesson the person was trying to teach us, and we make it true in our own life.

When we are capable of loving strongly, we can also suffer great sorrow, however this same necessity of loving serves to counteract the grief and heals us.

Grief is a peculiar thing, we are helpless in the face of it. It is like a window that will simply open of its own accord. The room grows cold and we shiver. However, it opens a little less each time, and one day we wonder what has become of it.

The reality is that in a way we will grieve forever. We will not get over the loss of a loved one; we will learn to live with it. We will heal and we will rebuild ourself around the loss we have suffered. We will be whole again but we will never be the same. Nor should we be the same, nor would we want to.

Maybe, death is no more than a turning of us, from time to eternity.

"To hold, you must first open your hand. Let go."
